- All 50 state attorneys general sued Intuit for deliberately steering millions of low-income Americans away from free IRS filing and into paid TurboTax products. The 2022 settlement required Intuit to pay $141 million to about 4.4 million consumers who were charged for returns they were entitled to file for free.
- The FTC's chief administrative law judge ruled in 2023 that Intuit violated federal law by running years of "free" TurboTax advertising that misled consumers who were ineligible for the free tier, including gig workers with 1099 income. The ruling found a "cognizant danger of a recurring violation" and issued a cease-and-desist order.
